B-52 Shot

Ingredients

  • 15 ml (0.5 oz) Coffee Liqueur (e.g., Kahlúa)
  • 15 ml (0.5 oz) Irish Cream Liqueur (e.g., Baileys)
  • 15 ml (0.5 oz) Orange Liqueur (e.g., Grand Marnier or Cointreau)

Instructions

Preparation

  1. Choose Your Glass: Select a standard shot glass.
  2. First Layer (Coffee Liqueur): Pour the coffee liqueur carefully into the bottom of the shot glass. This is the densest ingredient, so it will form the base.
  3. Second Layer (Irish Cream): Slowly pour the Irish cream liqueur over the back of a spoon held just above the first layer. The spoon will help to gently disperse the liquid, allowing it to float on top of the coffee liqueur without mixing. Take your time to create a distinct layer.
  4. Third Layer (Orange Liqueur): Repeat the spoon technique for the orange liqueur. Pour it gently over the back of the spoon, allowing it to form the top layer. Grand Marnier is often preferred for its slightly higher alcohol content, which aids in flaming (if desired).
  5. Serve: Present your beautifully layered B-52 shot immediately.

Optional: Flaming the B-52

For a dramatic presentation, the B-52 can be flamed. Exercise extreme caution if attempting this.

  1. Ensure Proper Layering: Make sure your orange liqueur (Grand Marnier works best for this) is the top layer and that it's a distinct, unmixed layer.
  2. Light Carefully: Using a long lighter or a bar lighter, carefully ignite the top layer of orange liqueur. It should catch fire quickly.
  3. Serve Immediately: Serve the flaming shot with a warning to the drinker to extinguish the flame before consuming. This can be done by covering the glass with a coaster or simply letting it burn out for a few seconds. Do NOT drink while flaming!

Tips for the Perfect B-52

  • Spoon Technique is Key: The success of a layered shot relies on the density of the liquids. Always pour the lighter (less dense) liquids over the back of a spoon to prevent them from mixing with the heavier layers below.
  • Chill Your Ingredients: While not strictly necessary, chilling your liqueurs beforehand can make them slightly denser and easier to layer, as well as making the shot more refreshing.
  • Practice Makes Perfect: Don't be discouraged if your first attempt isn't perfectly layered. With a little practice, you'll master the technique.
  • Safety First with Fire: If flaming, ensure you are in a well-ventilated area, away from flammable materials. Have a fire extinguisher or a damp cloth nearby. Never drink a flaming shot.

Variations

  • B-51: Replace the orange liqueur with Frangelico (hazelnut liqueur) for a nutty twist.
  • B-52 with Full Payload: Add a fourth layer of dark rum or absinthe on top for an even stronger kick and more intense flame (use extreme caution).
  • B-53: Swap the Irish Cream for Sambuca (anise-flavoured liqueur).
  • B-54: Substitute the Grand Marnier with Amaretto (almond liqueur).
  • B-55: Use Absinthe as the top layer (again, for flaming, exercise extreme caution due to high ABV).
