Baby Guinness Shot: The Perfect Mini Pint
The Baby Guinness is a beloved shot, famous for its striking resemblance to a pint of the dark stuff. Despite its name, it contains no actual Guinness! Instead, a clever layering of coffee liqueur and Irish cream creates the iconic dark body and creamy head. It's a quick, sweet, and visually impressive shot, perfect for parties or as a post-dinner treat.
Ingredients
- 25ml (approx. 0.85 oz) Coffee Liqueur (e.g., KahlĂșa, Tia Maria)
- 15ml (approx. 0.5 oz) Irish Cream Liqueur (e.g., Baileys)
Equipment
- Shot glass (standard 40-60ml / 1.5-2 oz capacity)
- Bar spoon or back of a spoon
Instructions
- Chill Your Ingredients: For the best layering and drinking experience, ensure both your coffee liqueur and Irish cream are well-chilled. You can even chill your shot glass beforehand.
- Pour the Base: Carefully pour the 25ml of coffee liqueur into the shot glass. This will form the 'body' of your Baby Guinness.
- Create the 'Head': Take your bar spoon (or a regular teaspoon) and turn it upside down, resting the tip just inside the rim of the shot glass, above the coffee liqueur.
- Layer the Cream: Slowly and gently pour the 15ml of Irish cream liqueur over the back of the spoon. The spoon will help to disperse the cream evenly and prevent it from mixing too quickly with the denser coffee liqueur, allowing it to float on top.
- Observe the Magic: As you pour, the Irish cream will form a distinct, creamy white layer on top of the dark coffee liqueur, perfectly mimicking the head of a pint of Guinness.
- Serve Immediately: Present your Baby Guinness shots as soon as they are layered for maximum visual impact. Enjoy responsibly!
Tips for Success
- Density Matters: The key to layering is the difference in density. Coffee liqueur is denser than Irish cream, so it will naturally sink. Pouring slowly and over a spoon minimises disturbance.
- Temperature Control: Colder liquids are generally denser. Chilling your ingredients helps maintain their density differences and makes layering easier.
- Practice Makes Perfect: Don't worry if your first attempt isn't flawless. A little practice will make you a layering pro!
Variations
- Coffee Liqueur Choice: While KahlĂșa is traditional, feel free to experiment with other coffee liqueurs like Tia Maria or a homemade coffee liqueur for subtle flavour differences.
- Cream Liqueur Swaps: You could try other cream liqueurs, but Baileys (or a similar Irish cream) offers the best colour and consistency for the 'head'.
