Ingredients
- 2 oz (60ml) Blanco Tequila (100% agave recommended)
- 1 oz (30ml) Fresh Lime Juice
- 0.75 oz (22.5ml) Orange Liqueur (e.g., Cointreau, Triple Sec)
- Salt for rim (optional)
- Lime wedge or wheel for garnish
- Ice
Instructions
- Prepare Your Glass: If desired, rim a chilled Margarita glass or coupe with salt. To do this, moisten the rim with a lime wedge, then gently dip the rim into a shallow plate of salt.
- Combine Ingredients: Add the Blanco Tequila, fresh lime juice, and orange liqueur to a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
- Shake: Secure the lid on the shaker and shake vigorously for 10-15 seconds until the shaker is well-chilled and frosty on the outside.
- Strain: Strain the mixture into your prepared, salt-rimmed glass. You can serve it 'up' (without ice in a coupe) or 'on the rocks' (over fresh ice in a Margarita or rocks glass).
- Garnish: Garnish with a fresh lime wedge or wheel.
Tips
- Fresh Lime Juice is Paramount: This is the absolute key to a superior Margarita. Bottled lime juice simply won't deliver the vibrant, fresh flavour you're looking for.
- Quality Tequila Matters: Invest in a good quality 100% agave Blanco (silver) tequila. It will make a noticeable difference to the smoothness and overall taste of your drink.
- Adjust Sweetness to Taste: A classic Margarita is balanced between tart and sweet. If you prefer it slightly sweeter, you can add a small dash (0.25 oz / 7.5ml) of agave nectar or simple syrup to the shaker.
- Chilling Your Glass: A chilled glass will help keep your Margarita colder for longer, enhancing the drinking experience.
Variations
- Spicy Margarita: Muddle 1-2 thin slices of jalapeño (remove seeds for less heat) in the shaker before adding the other liquid ingredients.
- Fruit Margarita: Add 0.5-1 oz (15-30ml) of fruit purée (e.g., mango, strawberry, passion fruit) to the shaker along with the other ingredients for a fruity twist.
- Frozen Margarita: Combine all ingredients with a generous scoop of ice in a blender and blend until smooth for a refreshing slushie-style drink.
- Tommy's Margarita: A popular variation that replaces orange liqueur with agave nectar (0.75 oz tequila, 0.75 oz lime juice, 0.5 oz agave nectar).
