The Classic Old Fashioned: A Timeless Cocktail
The Old Fashioned is more than just a cocktail; it's a piece of history in a glass. Dating back to the early 19th century, this drink set the standard for what a cocktail should be: a harmonious blend of spirit, sugar, water, and bitters. Its name itself implies its heritage, a 'fashion' from an older time that has never truly gone out of style. Perfect for a quiet evening, a sophisticated gathering, or simply to appreciate the nuanced flavours of a good whiskey.
Ingredients
- 2 oz (60ml) Bourbon or Rye Whiskey
- 1 Sugar Cube (or 1/4 oz / 7.5ml Rich Simple Syrup)
- 2-3 Dashes Angostura Bitters
- A Splash of Water (if using sugar cube)
- Large Ice Cube or Sphere
- Orange Peel, for garnish
Instructions
- Prepare the Base: Place the sugar cube into an Old Fashioned glass. Add 2-3 dashes of Angostura bitters directly onto the sugar cube. If using a sugar cube, add a tiny splash of water (about 1/4 teaspoon) to help dissolve it.
- Muddle (if using sugar cube): Gently muddle the sugar cube and bitters together until the sugar is mostly dissolved and forms a paste. If using simple syrup, you can skip this step and just add the syrup and bitters directly to the glass.
- Add Whiskey: Pour the 2 oz (60ml) of Bourbon or Rye whiskey into the glass.
- Add Ice: Place a large ice cube or sphere into the glass. A large piece of ice melts slower, preventing over-dilution.
- Stir and Chill: Stir the mixture gently with a bar spoon for about 30-60 seconds. This process not only chills the drink but also slightly dilutes it, integrating the flavours beautifully.
- Garnish: Take an orange peel and express its essential oils over the drink by twisting it between your fingers. Rub the peel around the rim of the glass, then drop it into the drink.
- Serve: Your classic Old Fashioned is ready to be savoured.
Tips for Perfection
- Quality Ingredients: The Old Fashioned is a simple drink, so the quality of your whiskey, bitters, and even your ice will significantly impact the final taste.
- Don't Over-Muddle: If using a sugar cube, muddle just enough to dissolve the sugar. You're not making a mojito!
- Balance is Key: Adjust the amount of sugar and bitters to your preference. Some prefer it sweeter, others more bitter.
- Ice Matters: A large, dense ice cube or sphere will dilute your drink slower, keeping it colder for longer without watering down the flavour too quickly.
Variations
- Smoked Old Fashioned: Use a smoking gun or a culinary torch with wood chips to infuse smoke into the finished cocktail for an aromatic twist.
- Maple Old Fashioned: Substitute the sugar cube or simple syrup with 1/4 oz (7.5ml) of high-quality maple syrup for a rich, earthy sweetness.
- Rye Old Fashioned: While Bourbon is common, using a high-rye whiskey will give the drink a spicier, more assertive character.
- Different Bitters: Experiment with different types of bitters beyond Angostura, such as orange bitters, cherry bitters, or even chocolate bitters, to create unique flavour profiles.
