Ingredients
- 50ml (1.7 oz) Premium Vodka
- 25ml (0.85 oz) Coffee Liqueur (e.g., Kahlúa, Tia Maria)
- 30ml (1 oz) Freshly brewed espresso, chilled
- 10-15ml (0.35-0.5 oz) Simple Syrup (adjust to your sweetness preference and coffee liqueur)
- Ice
- 3 whole coffee beans, for garnish
Instructions
- Chill Your Glass: Place a martini glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water to chill while you prepare your drink.
- Brew & Chill Espresso: Brew a fresh shot of espresso and allow it to cool slightly. Chilling it beforehand helps prevent over-dilution.
- Combine Ingredients: Add the vodka, coffee liqueur, chilled espresso, and simple syrup to a cocktail shaker.
- Add Ice: Fill the shaker generously with ice cubes.
- Shake Vigorously: Secure the lid and shake very hard for about 15-20 seconds. This vigorous shaking is crucial for creating the signature frothy 'crema' on top of the martini. You'll know it's ready when the shaker is frosty cold.
- Strain: Discard the ice from your chilled martini glass. Double strain the mixture into the glass using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine-mesh sieve to catch any small ice shards and ensure a silky smooth texture.
- Garnish: Gently float three coffee beans on top of the foam. This not only looks elegant but also traditionally represents health, wealth, and happiness.
Tips
- Fresh Espresso is Key: Always use freshly brewed espresso for the best flavour and the most robust crema. Pre-made or stale coffee won't yield the same results.
- Adjust Sweetness: The amount of simple syrup can be adjusted. If your coffee liqueur is very sweet or you prefer a less sweet drink, reduce or omit the simple syrup.
- Shake, Don't Stir: Unlike some martinis, the Espresso Martini absolutely requires vigorous shaking to emulsify the ingredients and create that desirable foam.
- Double Strain for Perfection: Don't skip the double straining! It ensures a smooth, silky texture free from ice chips.
Variations
- Vanilla Espresso Martini: Use a vanilla-flavoured vodka or add a dash of vanilla extract to the shaker for a creamier, aromatic twist.
- Salted Caramel Espresso Martini: Introduce a small amount of salted caramel syrup (5-10ml) to the mix for a decadent treat.
- Spiced Espresso Martini: Infuse your simple syrup with cinnamon sticks or star anise, or add a pinch of ground cinnamon to the shaker for a warm, spiced flavour.
- Decaf Delight: For a late-night indulgence without the caffeine hit, simply use decaffeinated espresso.
