Long Island Iced Tea

Don't let the name fool you – this classic cocktail contains no tea at all! A potent blend of five white spirits, citrus, and a splash of cola, it's a deceptively refreshing and famously strong drink.

Long Island Iced Tea

Ingredients

  • 0.75 oz (22.5ml) Vodka
  • 0.75 oz (22.5ml) Gin
  • 0.75 oz (22.5ml) White Rum
  • 0.75 oz (22.5ml) Tequila Blanco
  • 0.75 oz (22.5ml) Triple Sec (or Cointreau for a premium version)
  • 1 oz (30ml) Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 0.5 oz (15ml) Simple Syrup (1:1 sugar to water)
  • Cola, to top (approx. 3-4 oz / 90-120ml)
  • Lemon wedge or slice, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Fill a highball glass generously with fresh ice cubes.
  2. Pour the vodka, gin, white rum, tequila blanco, triple sec, fresh lemon juice, and simple syrup directly into the prepared glass.
  3. Stir all the ingredients gently but thoroughly with a bar spoon for about 10-15 seconds to combine and chill the spirits.
  4. Top the glass with cola until it reaches the desired level, typically leaving a small space at the rim. The cola gives the drink its characteristic 'iced tea' colour.
  5. Garnish with a fresh lemon wedge or slice on the rim of the glass.
  6. Serve immediately and enjoy responsibly.

Tips

  • Fresh is Best: Always use freshly squeezed lemon juice for the brightest, most vibrant flavour. Bottled lemon juice will yield a less superior drink.
  • Adjust Sweetness: The amount of simple syrup can be adjusted to your personal preference. Start with 0.5 oz and add more if you prefer a sweeter drink.
  • Don't Over-Stir: After adding the cola, give it just a gentle stir to integrate it with the other ingredients, but avoid over-stirring which can flatten the carbonation.
  • Ice Matters: Use plenty of fresh ice to keep the drink cold and dilute it slowly as you sip, preventing it from becoming too strong too quickly.
  • Responsible Enjoyment: This is a very potent cocktail. Sip slowly and be aware of its high alcohol content.

Variations

  • Long Beach Iced Tea: For a fruity twist, substitute cranberry juice for the cola. This gives it a beautiful red hue and tart flavour.
  • Tokyo Iced Tea: Swap out the Triple Sec for Midori (melon liqueur) and use lemon-lime soda instead of cola for a vibrant green drink with a sweet, melon flavour.
  • Hawaiian Iced Tea: Replace the cola with pineapple juice for a tropical take on this classic.
  • Premium LIIT: Upgrade your spirits to higher-quality brands and use Cointreau instead of standard Triple Sec for a smoother, more refined cocktail.
