Moscow Mule
A refreshing classic, the Moscow Mule combines crisp vodka, zesty lime, and spicy ginger beer, traditionally served in a frosty copper mug.

Ingredients
- 2 oz (60ml) Vodka
- 0.5 oz (15ml) Fresh Lime Juice
- 4-6 oz (120-180ml) Cold Ginger Beer (to taste)
- Lime wedge or wheel, for garnish
- Fresh mint sprig, for garnish (optional)
- Ice
Instructions
- Fill a copper mug (or a highball glass) generously with ice.
- Add the vodka to the mug.
- Pour in the fresh lime juice.
- Top with cold ginger beer, adjusting the amount to your preferred level of spice and sweetness.
- Gently stir once or twice to combine the ingredients without losing too much carbonation.
- Garnish with a fresh lime wedge or wheel, and an optional mint sprig for an aromatic touch. Serve immediately.
Tips
The Copper Mug
While not strictly essential for taste, a copper mug is traditional and helps keep the drink colder for longer due to copper's excellent thermal conductivity. It also adds to the authentic aesthetic.
Fresh is Best
Always use freshly squeezed lime juice. Bottled lime juice simply doesn't compare in terms of vibrant, zesty flavour.
Choose Your Ginger Beer Wisely
The quality and flavour profile of your ginger beer will significantly impact the final taste of your Moscow Mule. Experiment with different brands to find one that suits your palate – some are spicier, some sweeter, and some have a more pronounced ginger kick.
Don't Over-Stir
A gentle stir is all that's needed to combine the ingredients. Over-stirring can flatten the carbonation of the ginger beer, making the drink less effervescent.
Chill Your Ingredients
For the most refreshing experience, ensure your vodka and ginger beer are well-chilled before mixing.
Variations
London Mule
Swap the vodka for gin for a more botanical and herbaceous twist.
Mexican Mule
Substitute the vodka with tequila blanco for an earthy, agave-infused version.
Kentucky Mule
Use bourbon instead of vodka to introduce rich, caramel, and vanilla notes.
Irish Mule
Replace vodka with Irish whiskey for a smoother, slightly sweeter, and malty profile.
Dark 'n' Stormy (Bermuda Mule)
While a distinct cocktail, it's a close cousin. Use dark rum instead of vodka, and often a more pronounced ginger beer. Typically garnished with a lime wedge.
