Rum & Coke: The Classic Highball
The Rum & Coke is a timeless classic for good reason. It's incredibly easy to make, refreshing, and universally enjoyed. Whether you're unwinding after a long day or looking for a simple party drink, this iconic highball delivers every time. Add a splash of fresh lime, and you've got yourself a Cuba Libre, elevating the drink with a zesty kick.
Ingredients
- 2 oz (60ml) Dark or Gold Rum (e.g., Bacardi Carta Negra, Havana Club Añejo Especial)
- 4-5 oz (120-150ml) Cola (e.g., Coca-Cola, Pepsi)
- 1/4 oz (7.5ml) Fresh Lime Juice (optional, for a Cuba Libre)
- Lime wedge or wheel, for garnish
- Ice
Instructions
- Fill a highball glass generously with ice.
- Pour in the dark or gold rum.
- If making a Cuba Libre, add the fresh lime juice at this stage.
- Top up the glass with cola.
- Gently stir once or twice to combine the ingredients without losing too much carbonation.
- Garnish with a fresh lime wedge or wheel. Serve immediately and enjoy!
Tips for the Perfect Rum & Coke
- Quality Matters: While simple, using a good quality rum and a fresh, well-carbonated cola will significantly enhance the flavour.
- Fresh Lime is Key: For a true Cuba Libre, don't skip the fresh lime juice. Bottled lime juice won't give you the same vibrant flavour.
- Don't Over-Stir: A gentle stir is all you need. Over-stirring can flatten the cola's carbonation.
- Adjust to Taste: The rum-to-cola ratio is a personal preference. Feel free to adjust it to make it stronger or lighter.
- Plenty of Ice: A glass full of ice keeps the drink colder for longer and prevents it from becoming diluted too quickly.
Variations
- Cuba Libre: As mentioned, simply adding 1/4 oz (7.5ml) of fresh lime juice transforms a Rum & Coke into its famous Cuban cousin.
- Spiced Rum & Coke: Swap out the dark or gold rum for a spiced rum (e.g., Captain Morgan, Kraken) for an aromatic and warming twist.
- Diet Rum & Coke: For a lighter option, use diet cola.
- Cherry Rum & Coke: Add a splash of cherry liqueur or muddle a few fresh cherries at the bottom of the glass before adding ice.
