Smoky Cherry Embrace

The Smoky Cherry Embrace

For those who appreciate the finer things in life, especially a dram with character, the Smoky Cherry Embrace offers an unparalleled experience. This cocktail is a masterful blend of robust flavours, designed to intrigue and satisfy. It takes the distinctive, peaty profile of an Islay Scotch, softens it with the luscious notes of cherry liqueur and the subtle sweetness of maple syrup, all tied together with a dash of bright orange bitters. The result is a complex, subtly sweet, and wonderfully smoky sip – a perfect companion for a cozy evening by the fire, a thoughtful post-dinner indulgence, or simply a moment of quiet contemplation.

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz (60ml) Smoky Islay Scotch (e.g., Laphroaig, Ardbeg, Lagavulin)

  • 0.5 oz (15ml) Cherry Liqueur (e.g., Cherry Heering)

  • 0.25 oz (7.5ml) Maple Syrup (Grade A Dark, Robust Taste recommended)

  • 2 Dashes Orange Bitters

  • Large Ice Cube

  • Garnish: Luxardo Cherry and Orange Peel

Instructions:

  1. Add the Islay Scotch, cherry liqueur, maple syrup, and orange bitters to a mixing glass.

  2. Fill the mixing glass with fresh ice and stir well for about 30 seconds, ensuring the mixture is thoroughly chilled and slightly diluted.

  3. Place a large ice cube (or sphere) into a chilled rocks glass.

  4. Strain the cocktail mixture from the mixing glass into the rocks glass over the large ice cube.

  5. Garnish with a single Luxardo cherry. Take an orange peel, express its oils over the drink by twisting it, then gently drop it into the glass or drape it over the rim.

  6. Serve immediately and savour responsibly.

Tips for Perfection:

  • Choose Your Scotch Wisely: The quality and intensity of your Islay Scotch will be the backbone of this drink. Don't shy away from a bold, peaty expression to truly let the smoky notes shine through.

  • Maple Syrup Matters: Opt for a good quality, dark maple syrup for a richer, more complex sweetness that complements the other strong flavours better than lighter syrups.

  • Chill Everything: A well-chilled mixing glass and rocks glass will help maintain the drink's temperature and prevent over-dilution, ensuring a crisp and enjoyable experience.

  • Large Ice: A single large ice cube melts slower than smaller cubes, preventing your drink from becoming watery too quickly and keeping it colder for longer.

Variations:

  • Smoky Twist: For an intensified smoky aroma, briefly smoke your rocks glass with a smoking gun before building the drink.

  • Different Cherry Notes: While Cherry Heering offers a rich, deep profile, a good quality kirsch or a different maraschino liqueur could be used for a drier, more floral cherry note.

  • Bitters Experiment: Try a dash of chocolate bitters alongside or instead of orange bitters for an even richer, darker, and more indulgent profile that pairs wonderfully with the smoky whisky.
